China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao met with UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan in New York on Wednesday, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
During the meeting, Wang said China is willing to work with all parties, including UNCTAD, to implement the Global Development Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative, and jointly safeguard the UN-centered international system.
He added that China is actively implementing the support measures announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping for UNCTAD and stands ready to further deepen pragmatic cooperation between the two sides.
Wang said the US' unilateral tariff hikes have dealt a severe blow to the multilateral trading system. He stressed that all parties should firmly uphold multilateralism and free trade, adhere to the fundamental principles of the multilateral trading system, and inject greater stability and certainty into the global economy.
Grynspan highly commended Chinese leaders for their concrete actions in supporting multilateralism during the meeting.
Grynspan expressed sincere appreciation for China's strong support of UNCTAD and said the organization stands ready to work with China to practice multilateralism and jointly safeguard the multilateral trading system.
UNCTAD also looks forward to deepening pragmatic cooperation with China and actively supporting Beijing in hosting events such as the APEC meeting in 2026, said Grynspan.
