A Chinese tourist previously reported missing in Egypt was in fact apprehended as part of an organized cyber fraud case, according to a post released Monday night on the Egyptian Interior Ministry's official X account.

Investigations revealed that the aforementioned tourist and others were arrested in accordance with legal procedures as part of an organized cyber fraud gang of eight members, including three of her nationality…Legal measures were taken, and the case has been handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office for further investigation, the post said.

According to the post, the gang lured victims, kidnapped them upon arrival, and forced them to contact their families to pay ransom money to be sent through electronic platforms.

The suspects were arrested in an apartment within s First Settlement Police District, where authorities seized firearms, knives, stun guns, and mobile phones containing evidence of their criminal activity. One kidnapped victim, also a Chinese national, was freed during the operation, according to the post.

The announcement follows media reports in China over the disappearance of 21-year-old tourist Chi Guangying, who last contacted her mother on the morning of September 21, according to Red Star News. Friends said Chi arrived in Egypt on August 9 intending to stay for an extended period, per reports.
