China's travel frenzy continued on the second day of the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, with an estimated 290 million cross-regional trips made across the country on Thursday. This represents a 2.2 percent increase from a year earlier, according to CCTV News, which cited data from the Ministry of Transport.
Railway passenger traffic remained above 19 million trips after hitting a single-day record high on Wednesday, with an expected 19.3 million trips handled.
Railway authorities in multiple regions have boosted capacity on popular lines and added passenger trains for tourists. Yunnan Railway has opened several China-Laos and China-Vietnam cross-border bullet trains for tourists, while Xinjiang Railway has kept major stations in Urumqi, Kashgar and Hami open 24 hours a day. Additionally, the Hohhot-Ejin Banner train service has been increased from two pairs weekly to daily operations.
Highway traffic saw an estimated 260 million trips on Thursday, an increase of 1.9 percent from a year earlier.
Passenger traffic by air is expected to have reached 2.45 million trips on Thursday, up 5.3 percent from the previous year. Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu are among the top domestic tourist destinations. Major airlines have added flights and deployed more wide-body aircraft to meet travel demand.
Waterway passenger volume is projected to have reached 1.6 million trips on Thursday, soaring 14.8 percent compared to a year earlier.
