Four people were killed on October 18 when a sightseeing vehicle in Qidong, Jiangsu Province was overturned and plunged into the water after being hit by strong winds. Police are investigating the cause of the accident, media reported on Sunday.

Following the accident, local emergency response, public security, firefighting and medical teams rushed to the scene to carry out rescue operations. The incident resulted in four fatalities — one person was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital, while three missing individuals were later found with no signs of life on the same day, China Central Television reported on Sunday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the company operating the sightseeing vehicle, Jiangsu Golden Beach Tourism and Culture Co, had violated the suspension notice requiring a halt to operations during strong winds and had unlawfully driven a sightseeing vehicle carrying 17 tourists onto the sea embankment within the resort. The persons responsible have been taken into custody, and the cause of the accident and accountability are under investigation.

Authorities said follow-up and compensation work have largely been completed.
