When asked to comment about media reports on the US' new National Security Strategy that claimed the US does not support any unilateral change to the status quo in the Taiwan Straits, and inclusion of multiple negative claims on Taiwan in the National Defense Authorization Act passed by the House, as well as US defense secretary's remarks at the Reagan National Defense Forum claiming to reinforce US military posture in the first island chain to deter conflict in the Taiwan Straits, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said on Monday that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is a part of China. This is an indisputable historical and legal fact, as well as status quo of the Taiwan Straits that is not allowed to change.

How to resolve the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese people alone and brooks no external interference, Jiang said, noting that any attempt to "use Taiwan to contain China" is doomed to fail. The spokesperson urged the US side to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the three US-China joint communiqués, cease sending wrong signals to the separatist forces of "Taiwan independence," and refrain from escalating tensions in the Taiwan Straits region.

"We hope the US side adjust its strategic perception of China, work with China, uphold the principle of no conflict or confrontation, promote the building of a military relationship that features equality, respect, peaceful coexistence and a constructive and steady development, so as to add certainty and positive energy to the growth of bilateral relations and the peace and stability of the world," Jiang said.
