Thai FM expresses appreciation for China's role in deescalation of Thailand-Cambodia border conflict: media

Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said on Tuesday that Thailand appreciates China's role in helping ease tensions and de-escalate the situation in the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, Xinhua News Agency reported on Tuesday.

Nikorndej said at a press briefing on the Thai-Cambodian border situation the same day that Thailand thanks China for actively helping ease tensions and de-escalate the in the Thai-Cambodian border conflict in its own way, and appreciates China upholding objective and impartial stance, Xinhua reported. 

Speaking at the briefing following the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur which took place on Monday, the Thai spokesperson said that Thailand has set strict conditions for de-escalation after months of deteriorating relations and renewed border skirmishes, the Thai media The Nation reported. 

He also reiterated that Thailand has consistently upheld resolving the issue within a bilateral framework, and that any sustainable solution must be directly advanced by both Thailand and Cambodia, according to Xinhua. 

The two sides plan to convene the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on Wednesday in Thailand, during which the two countries' militaries are expected to hold consultations on ceasefire arrangements, according to Xinhua.

The briefing on Tuesday also touched upon the roles of regional and global powers. Thailand expressed appreciation for China's stance of non-interference and neutrality, following a meeting between the Chinese Ambassador and the Thai Prime Minister, according to the Thai media report.
