Facts have proven that an increasing number of Taiwan compatriots have come to realize that "Taiwan independence" means war, that the Lai Ching-te authorities' stubborn pursuit of "independence" will only bring conflict and chaos to Taiwan, and that condoning or supporting "Taiwan independence" will only turn themselves and their families into cannon fodder, said Chen Binhua, a spokesperson of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office on Wednesday.

Chen's remarks at the regular press conference were made in response to media inquiry over a recent poll in China's Taiwan region, which shows that on issues related to cross-Straits conflict, more than 60 percent of Taiwan people are unwilling to go to the battlefield themselves or have their family members do so.

Peace is the common aspiration of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, and reunification is the only direction for Taiwan's future, the spokesperson said.

We hope that the broad masses of Taiwan compatriots, proceeding from the greater good of the nation and their own safety and well-being, will resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence" separatist activities, join us in safeguarding peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, promoting peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, and creating a bright future of national reunification and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, Chen said.
