China consistently opposes politicizing and instrumentalizing human rights, opposes applying international law when it suits one's interests and discarding it otherwise, and opposes using human rights as a pretext to interfere in other countries' internal affairs, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular press conference on Thursday.

Mao made the remarks when asked to comment on the remarks of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk that the US military operation in Venezuela undermines a fundamental principle of international law and the UN Charter. Türk expressed deep concern over the US attempts to justify military intervention by invoking human rights, and 16 experts of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) strongly condemning the large-scale military action carried out by the US against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Mao said China firmly supports Venezuela in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and legitimate rights and interests, and firmly supports all countries in choosing their own paths for human rights development in light of their national conditions. China stands ready to work with the international community to uphold the authority of international law, advocate multilateralism, and safeguard world peace and stability, she said.
