China has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions lacking a basis in international law or authorization from the UN Security Council, and opposed external forces interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs under any pretext, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated Wednesday when addressing a question noting that recent US Department of Justice documents have dropped claims that the "Cartel de los Soles" is an actual group, while Washington has justified its military action against Venezuela by citing the alleged existence of drug cartels, and whether Chinese side plans to take any action to help secure the release of President Maduro and his wife.

The US forcibly seizing President Maduro and his wife clearly violates international law and the basic norms governing international relations, as well as the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, China once again calls on the US to immediately release President Maduro and his wife, and to resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation, Mao added.
