Mao Ning
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning addressed several questions concerning developments in Iran and the escalating situation in the region marked by US threats of a potential strike if Iran uses lethal force against protesters.
We have always opposed interference in other countries' internal affairs and we have always maintained that the sovereignty and security of all countries should receive full protection under international law. We oppose the use of force or the threat of use of force in international relations. We call on all parties to do more things that are conducive to peace and stability in the Middle East, Mao stated, when asked to comment on a media question noting that the protests in Iran have resulted in deaths and that US President Donald Trump threatened if Iran uses lethal force against protesters, he might strike Iran.
China hopes that the Iranian government and people can overcome the current difficulties and maintain national stability, Mao stated at a regular press conference on Monday.
In response to another question on whether there have been any Chinese casualties in the protests in Iran and whether China is calling on its citizens to leave the country, Mao responded that China is closely following the situation in Iran and has not received any reports of Chinese citizens being injured or killed there. She added that China will spare no effort to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in Iran.
Taking this opportunity, Mao also reminded Chinese citizens in Iran to pay close attention to the local security situation and take necessary measures to ensure their own safety. If assistance is needed, they may contact the Chinese Embassy in Iran or call the consular protection hotline.
Also on Monday, in response to a media inquiry about comments from US President Donald Trump stating that Washington is closely monitoring the situation in Iran and that the US is "looking at some very strong options," as well as reports suggesting the US has considered a range of measures, including sanctions, deploying cyber weapons, and potential military strikes, Mao stated that China has consistently opposed interference in other countries' internal affairs, upheld that the sovereignty and security of all countries should be fully protected, and opposed the use or threat of force in international relations.
