"To safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, 'Taiwan independence' must be unequivocally opposed. People on both sides of the Straits understand this clearly, and the international community sees it clearly as well." Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said at Wednesday's press conference.
Zhu made the remarks when responding to a media inquiry regarding recent comments by Singapore's Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who reportedly said that he believes that "it is important that there is peace in the Taiwan Strait," while also said that "over the last few years, the shift has been towards tenser, more troubled relationships in the Taiwan Straits, and claimed "there have been actions on all sides, although all sides say that we are maintaining a status quo." The inquiry also referred to Taiwan island's so-called "foreign affairs" department claiming that Lee's views do not fully reflect reality and Taiwan must actively take actions against mainland's actions with ultimate goal of changing the status quo.
Zhu noted that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China, which constitutes the true status quo across the Taiwan Straits. She said that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities' stubborn adherence to the "Taiwan independence" separatist stance and collusion with external forces to seek "independence" through provocation are the root cause of damage to peace and stability across the Straits and to the status quo. "Taiwan independence" is incompatible with peace across the Taiwan Straits, she stressed.
"To safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, 'Taiwan independence' must be unequivocally opposed. People on both sides of the Straits understand this clearly, and the international community sees it clearly as well," Zhu added.
