"Resolving the Taiwan question is China's own matter," Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on Wednesday's press conference, noting that there is only one China in the world, Taiwan is part of China, and the Taiwan question is China's internal affair. She made the statements in response to a media inquiry about remarks made by US President Donald Trump in a recent interview with The New York Times, in which he said that the China "considers it [Taiwan] to be a part of China," and "that's up to" China on how to deal with the Taiwan question. His remarks have drawn attention on the island, with some island public opinion saying the US had once again made clear an "abandoning Taiwan region" stance.

Zhu stressed that China will firmly safeguard national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
