In response to a media question claiming that US President Donald Trump is telling the world that he doesn't need international law and that his power is limited only by his own morality, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated on Wednesday that the international law based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter is the cornerstone of the existing international order and an essential basis for resolving international disputes. Upholding international law is crucial to maintaining international fairness and justice and preventing the world from regressing to a "law of the jungle."

"Major countries should take the lead in respecting the authority of international law and fulfilling their obligations under it," Mao said.
