Starting from February 2, 2026, a 5 percent provisional import tariff rate will be implemented on whisky, according to an announcement on adjusting the whisky import tariff released by China's Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council on Friday.

The announcement came amid British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's visit in China. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson from China's Foreign Ministry, told a press conference on Friday that the visit has yielded fruitful results, demonstrating the breadth and depth of cooperation between the two countries.

According to Guo, China will reduce the import tariff rate on whisky from 10 percent to 5 percent. In addition, both sides agreed to resume the China-UK High-Level Security Dialogue, and hold a new round of institutionalized dialogues within the year, including the China-UK Strategic Dialogue and Economic and Financial Dialogue.
