The Chinese Consulate General in Auckland said in a statement on Friday that it pays high attention to a recent case of a Chinese citizen being attacked in Auckland and had urged local police to conduct a prompt and fair investigation into the case.
In the statement on WeChat, the Consulate General said that it had learned that a Chinese citizen was assaulted by several unidentified men while livestreaming on a street in downtown Auckland. The victim sustained multiple injuries and had personal belongings robbed, according to the statement.
“The Consulate General attaches high importance to this case. We immediately expressed grave concern to the New Zealand Police in Auckland, urging a prompt, fair and serious investigation and handling in accordance with the law, and effective protection of the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens. The police have stated that the case is under full investigation,” read the statement.
The Consulate General has also called the victim to convey Consul General Chen Shijie's cordial greetings and wish the victim a speedy recovery.
The Consulate General said it would continue to follow the progress of the investigation and provide necessary consular protection and assistance to the victim.
The Consulate General also reminded Chinese citizens in its consular district to enhance safety awareness and strengthen self-protection, advising them to contact the police immediately and reach out to the Consulate General for assistance in case of emergency.
