The US accusation is unsubstantiated and entirely groundless, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, in response to media inquiry on reports that Christopher Yeaw, the US Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Arms Control and Nonproliferation, accused China of conducting nuclear testing, and said the US will return to testing "on an equal basis" with other countries. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization said on its website that they detected two very small seismic events in China on June 22, 2020, but with this data alone, it is not possible to assess the cause of these events with confidence.

Mao said that China has reiterated on multiple occasions that it all along firmly supports the purposes and objectives of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and honors the moratorium on nuclear testing—a commitment made by the five nuclear-weapons states.

Shirking arms control obligations by vilification harms the US's own reputation, the spokesperson said.

China urges the US to abide by the moratorium on nuclear testing, uphold the global consensus on nuclear test ban, and stop finding false justification for resuming nuclear testing, Mao added.
