Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning
In response to a question about reports that China will hold talks with the US in Geneva on Tuesday local time as the US and Russia are in talks in Geneva over arms control, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press conference on Tuesday that during the high-level segment of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva this week, the Chinese delegation is willing to maintain communication with participating delegations of various countries and exchange views on the work of the Conference on Disarmament as well as on issues related to the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
As a country possessing a large nuclear arsenal, the US should fulfill its special and primary responsibility for nuclear disarmament, which is a consensus of the international community, Mao said.
China hopes that the US will meet the expectations of the international community, resume strategic stability dialogue with Russia, and discuss follow-up arrangements to the New START, the spokesperson said.
