The US-Israeli military strikes against Iran have entered the 11th day. Iranian Ambassador to China Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli on Monday briefed media on the country's current crisis and the direction of its foreign policy. In response to a question raised by the Global Times at the press conference on Monday, Fazli said that under the leadership of the new supreme leader, Iran advocates for following a "three-step" scheme proposed by senior Iranian officials in a phone call to promote the de-escalation and a political solution.
Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ali Khamenei, was selected as Iran's new supreme leader, Iran's Assembly of Experts announced on Sunday.
At the press conference held on Monday at the embassy, Fazli, when addressing the Global Times reporter's question - under the leadership of the new Supreme Leader, will Iran continue to resolve the crisis through political and diplomatic means? - Fazli said that we advocate for following a three-step plan proposed by senior Iranian officials during a phone call to promote de-escalation and a political solution to the status quo.
The first step is to end the war and achieve a ceasefire. The war should be stopped first by the initiating party. To this end, it is necessary to take action to force the US and Israel to immediately cease all military attacks.
The second step is to return to the negotiating table, yet this step is difficult to achieve - almost impossible, "because we no longer trust the US," the ambassador said, adding that "unless major world powers and the UN Security Council could intervene in the negotiations and provide binding and inviolable guarantees to ensure that no further acts of aggression occur during the negotiations, and establish a lasting and reliable mechanism to safeguard the outcome of the negotiations."
Third, all countries need to unite and cooperate to jointly resist unilateralism and promote the development of multilateralism.
"Based on above principles being fully respected and implemented, we are willing to resume the relevant dialogue," Ambassador Fazli said.
Chinese government's special envoy on the Middle East issue Zhai Jun on Sunday met with Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday.
Zhai said China will further play a constructive role and work with the GCC and Gulf countries to actively promote peace, end hostilities and de-escalate tensions. Ambassador Fazli spoke highly of China's mediation efforts and expressed expectations for that.
"We welcome any measures China takes that help end the war and prevent further aggression. As a major power, China wields significant influence in the region and the world. We believe and expect that through dialogue, China can encourage relevant parties to exercise restraint, which will play a crucial role in promoting a cease-fire and stopping aggression," Fazli told the Global Times.
