China has lodged solemn representations with the Japanese side in both Beijing and Tokyo, expressing strong dissatisfaction, and once again urges Japan to immediately conduct a thorough investigation, severely punish the offender, and give China a responsible account of the matter, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday in response to a media inquiry on the latest developments regarding a member of Japan's Self-Defense Forces, who intruded into the Chinese Embassy in Japan, and whether China had any further comment on the matter.
Lin said the Chinese Embassy in Japan is coordinating with Japanese police on follow-up handling of the case, and that the suspect has been handed over to the Japanese police. Information verified and made public by Japanese police shows that the individual is a sitting third lieutenant officer of Japan's Self-Defense Force, who climbed over the wall and broke into the Chinese Embassy in Japan while carrying a knife measuring as long as 18 centimeters.
The incident seriously threatened the safety of the embassy personnel, disrupted the peace of the embassy, and undermined its dignity, showing that Japan had failed to effectively fulfill its obligations under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and its special responsibility to protect the inviolability of diplomatic missions and representatives, Lin said.
He said China once again urges Japan to immediately conduct a thorough investigation, severely punish the offender, and give China a responsible account of the matter.
