Responding to a question related to the visit by four US senators to Taiwan island, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday that China consistently and firmly opposes official exchanges between the US and the Taiwan region, and has lodged solemn representations with the US side.

The US should strictly abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques to handle the Taiwan question prudently and appropriately, cease all forms of official exchanges between the US and the Taiwan region, stop sending any wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and take concrete actions to safeguard the overall interests of China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, Mao said.

"China's position on the Taiwan questions is consistent and clear, and China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity," the spokesperson said.
