Both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one China. People on both sides are Chinese and part of one family. Affairs across the Straits are family matters of compatriots on both sides and should naturally be discussed and resolved by members of the family themselves. Our compatriots on both sides have sufficient wisdom and ability to properly handle their own issues, Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said on Wednesday after Mainland Affairs Council of the island of Taiwan claimed that the Chinese mainland is "internalizing the cross-Straits question" regarding the visit to the Chinese mainland by a delegation led by Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party.

We are willing, on the common political foundation of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence," to work together with all political parties, organizations, and individuals in Taiwan island, including the KMT, to promote the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, seek peace in the Taiwan Straits, bring well-being to our compatriots, and achieve national rejuvenation, Zhu said.

The Democratic Progressive Party authorities, driven by their own "Taiwan independence" interests, have engaged in smearing and distortion, which is unpopular and lacks public support, Zhu noted.

Asked for comments on another question regarding a YouTube poll shows that 60 percent of respondents believe Cheng Li-wun's visit will have a positive impact on this year's KMT election for county and city chiefs, giving it a boost, Zhu said that the visit aligns with the mainstream public opinion on the island, which calls for peace, development, exchanges, and cooperation. It is of great significance for promoting the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations and safeguarding the interests and well-being of Taiwan compatriots, and will receive affirmation and support from the people of Taiwan.
