China welcomes all efforts conducive to securing a ceasefire and ending the fighting, and commends Pakistan for its assistance in brokering the temporary US-Iran ceasefire, as well as for playing a fair and balanced mediating role. The urgent priority is to do everything possible to prevent a resumption of hostilities, preserve the hard-won ceasefire momentum, and adhere to resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday.
Guo made the remarks in response to reports that the US had said talks with Iran might be held in Pakistan within the next two days. Guo was asked whether China had any comment, how it viewed the next round of negotiations, and whether it would continue to play a mediating role.
Guo also noted that on the Tuesday morning, President Xi Jinping, during a meeting with Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, put forward a four-point proposal on promoting peace and stability in the Middle East: adherence to the principle of peaceful coexistence, adherence to the principle of national sovereignty, adherence to the principle of international rule of law and that development and security should be coordinated.
Guo said these four important proposals reflect China's consistent position and active efforts to promote peace, stop the fighting, and advocate dialogue to resolve differences. China stands ready to work with the international community to continue contributing to the early restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East and the Gulf region.
