Police in Shanghai's Pudong district handled an incident in which a tourist assaulted another visitor after being dissuaded from smoking inside the Shanghai Disney Resort, according to a police statement released on Monday. The smoker has since apologized to and compensated the victim, and both parties have reached a mediated settlement.
According to the statement, police in Pudong New District received an emergency call at around 5:45 pm on Sunday about a physical altercation at the entrance of a restaurant on Shendi West Road. Officers promptly arrived and handled the incident.
The Global Times found via Amap that the Shendi West Road is located within the Shanghai Disney Resort.
A 34-year-old visitor surnamed Xu was smoking in an outdoor area of a restaurant when a 24-year-old man surnamed Zhang stepped forward to dissuade him. Perceiving Zhang's words as overly harsh, Xu physically assaulted Zhang, the statement said.
Medical examinations afterward confirmed that Zhang sustained soft tissue bruises with no severe injuries, according to the statement.
Given that both parties were willing to resolve the dispute through mediation, local police authority conducted legally sanctioned conciliation, read the statement. Xu has formally apologized and provided compensation to Zhang, and the two sides have signed a mediation agreement, according to the statement.
Since May 29, 2025, the Shanghai Disney Resort has strengthened its tobacco control measures, The Paper reported on Monday. As clearly stipulated in its guest guidelines, smoking, including e-cigarettes and other smoke-emitting products, is prohibited across the resort and Disney Town, except in designated smoking zones, per the report.
Visitors may only smoke in areas marked with "Designated Smoking Area" signs within the Resort, read the guidelines.
