The Yellow River Tunnel in Jinan city, provincial capital of East China’s Shandong Province, was hollowed out on Saturday. The tunnel is the first across the Yellow River enabling both railway and highway crossing.

The tunnel is 4,760 meters long and was designed as comprising two channels with double-floor layout, with highway running on the upper floor and subway on the lower floor. The tunnel will shorten the time for crossing the Yellow River to four minutes by car and two and a half minutes by subway.

Co-constructed by Jinan City Construction Group and China Railway 14th Bureau Group CO, the tunnel connects Jinan’s urban area on the southern side of the Yellow River and a comprehensive new economic and technology zone on the northern side of the city.

The tunnel will be officially launched in October 2021, which will reduce driving times by about one hour, from crossing the Yellow River Bridge.
