Rescue underway with 5 killed, 6 missing in E.China chemical plant explosion

An explosion occurred at Youdao Chemical Co, Ltd workshop in Gaomi, East China's Shandong Province, at around 11:57 am on Tuesday, with local authorities confirming that the accident has resulted in five fatalities, six people missing, and 19 minor injuries as of 7:25 pm Tuesday.

Following the explosion, rescue efforts were fully mobilized at all levels. The government of Shandong, responding to the severity of the incident, immediately activated emergency response mechanisms and established a joint rescue command center. All-out efforts are underway to organize rescue operations, including comprehensive search for missing personnel, medical treatment of the injured, family support, aftermath handling, and environmental monitoring. On-site search, rescue, and cleanup operations are currently still underway, said Gaomi's Emergency Management Bureau, according to CCTV News.

Previously, upon receiving the report, China's Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched a working group to the site, mobilizing fire and rescue forces as well as specialized national work safety emergency teams for reinforcement. Medical and health experts were also coordinated to participate in the treatment of the injured. The local fire and rescue team has deployed 55 vehicles and 232 personnel to the scene for emergency response operations.

Meanwhile, a working staff from the Weifang Emergency Management Bureau told the Global Times that the incident is currently being handled, with all personnel still engaged in response efforts, and no further details are available at this time.

A staff member with the Ecological Environment Bureau of Gaomi told The Paper that after the incident, relevant personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene to monitor environmental pollution conditions, "including carrying out water sampling." 

A student from a school located nearly a kilometer away from the chemical plant in a straight line said they were doing homework in the classroom when they suddenly heard a loud "boom," so intense that it shattered the classroom windows, with some window frames collapsing, The Paper reported. 

According to The Paper, the official website of the Youdao Chemical Co, Ltd showed that the company covers an area of over 700 acres and currently employs more than 300 people. The company specializes in low-toxicity, high-efficiency pesticides and their specialized intermediates, focusing on the development, production, and sales of continuous-flow technology for pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and related fine chemical intermediates.

The company's website has become inaccessible as of press time on Tuesday, the Global Times has found.
