Recently, Nepal and India have comprehensively increased patrols and inspections in the Nepal-India border area. The Chinese Embassy in Nepal has repeatedly reminded Chinese citizens traveling in Nepal to avoid going to the Nepal-India border area, but there are still individual Chinese citizens who have not heeded the advice and insisted on going, resulting in several incidents of being arrested by Indian border forces on excuse of illegal entry, the embassy said on Friday.
To ensure the safety of Chinese citizens traveling in Nepal, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal once again solemnly reminds Chinese citizens not to go to the Nepal-India border area, the Chinese embassy issued the alert notice in a statement on Friday via its official WeChat account.
The embassy said that the border between Nepal and India is open border, with few boundary markers. Citizens of Nepal and India can freely cross with identification documents, but foreign citizens cannot travel to India through Nepal without a visa. Chinese citizens going to the Nepal-India border risk inadvertently crossing the border into Indian territory, which could lead to arrest by Indian military or police.
India has strict penalties for illegal entry. Even unintentional border crossings into Indian territory can face arrest and prosecution, potentially facing 2-8 years of imprisonment and fines, and no possibility of bail, the Chinese embassy said in the notice.
Chinese citizens are advised to avoid approaching the Nepal-India border to avoid legal consequences or personal losses caused by negligence or misguided attempts to cross into India illegally.
In case of emergency, citizens should contact the Chinese Embassy in Nepal for assistance.
