The core concept of the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) is in full conformity with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, demonstrating China's firm support for the UN and reflecting the common aspiration of the international community, thus receiving extensive support, Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Guo's words were made when asked to comment on the recent endorsements of the GGI by UN leadership and member states, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, stating that the GGI put forward by China has rich substance and that its core concepts align with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, coupled with Guterres' remarks that multilateralism is under strain.
The spokesperson said that at the historic milestone of the UN's 80th anniversary, nations worldwide are contemplating the future direction of human society — whether to uphold multilateralism or allow the law of the jungle to return, whether to reinvigorate international cooperation or let unilateralism and bullying prevail.
"From this year's UN General Debate, the general consensus of the international community is that the status of the United Nations must be upheld, and global governance needs to be strengthened," Guo noted.
Guo stressed that previously, President Xi Jinping proposed the GGI, emphasizing adherence to sovereign equality, compliance with international rule of law, practice of multilateralism, advocacy for people-centered approaches, and a focus on action-oriented measures, presenting China's proposal on addressing global governance challenges.
Guo noted that the GGI, along with the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, each has its respective priorities and can be pursued simultaneously, representing a systematic package of international public goods offered by China in the new era.
"The global initiatives inject stability and certainty into a turbulent world from four dimensions highlighting China's role as a responsible actor in international affairs," said Guo, noting that "China looks forward to working with all parties to implement these four global initiatives, to realize the UN Charter's vision of peace and development, and benefit people of all countries."
