When asking to comment on that the US Department of Defense recently announced an arms sale package worth about $330 million to China's Taiwan region, while Rupert Hammond-Chambers, president of the "US-Taiwan Business Council (USTBC)," claimed the sale demonstrates Washington's commitment to helping Taiwan's military achieve high operational rates and that US arms sales to Taiwan could reach a record high within the next 12 months, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday that China firmly opposes the US providing weapons to China's Taiwan region in any form.
The US side should abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiques, especially the August 17 Communique of 1982, stop arming Taiwan, and handle Taiwan-related question with the utmost prudence, Zhu said on Wednesday's regular press conference.
Zhu noted that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have willingly acted as an ATM for American arms dealers, squandering the hard-earned money of people on the island. Begging external forces for false protection will only push Taiwan island further into danger and bring catastrophic harm to Taiwan compatriots.
We sternly warn the DPP authorities that the reunification of the motherland is unstoppable. Attempts to seek "independence" by relying on the US or military means are doomed to fail, Zhu said.
