A 75-year-old Chinese female tourist was killed and four others sustained minor injuries after an off-road vehicle carrying Chinese nationals overturned on the ice surface of Lake Baikal in Russia's Olkhon District on Wednesday, the Chinese Consulate General in Irkutsk told the Global Times.

The Chinese Consulate General in Irkutsk told the Global Times on Wednesday evening that the deputy consul general and a consular attaché were heading to the scene to handle follow-up matters.

The consulate said the vehicle was driving on the frozen lake when it accidentally overturned. The victim was a member of a tour group from East China's Jiangsu Province, while the four injured tourists all suffered minor wounds.

After receiving the report, the Consulate General immediately activated its emergency response mechanism, contacted the tour guide, the Chinese tourists involved and local rescue personnel, and coordinated volunteers to rush to the scene.

The injured were first sent to the Khuzhir Township medical station and have since been transferred to the Olkhon District Central Hospital for further treatment, the consulate said, adding that it is fully assisting with follow-up arrangements for the casualties.
