When asked to comment on media report that the "American Institute in Taiwan" claims that mainland intentionally mischaracterizes World War II-era documents to pressure and isolate the island of Taiwan as these accords made no determination of Taiwan island's ultimate political status, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry Lin Jian said Monday that the fallacies of the US side's relevant institution is distorting black and white and confusing the public. Chinese side expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to this.
Taiwan's restoration to China in 1945 is a victorious outcome of WWII and an integral part of the post-war international order. A series of instruments with legal effect under international law, including the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, all confirm China's sovereignty over Taiwan, Lin stated, adding that Taiwan's status was completely resolved as early as 1945 with the victory of the Chinese people's War of Resistance against Japan.
The Treaty of San Francisco is an illegal and invalid document issued by the US and a number of other countries after World War II to reach post-war settlement with Japan, a process that excluded China and the Soviet Union, Lin said, adding that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. This is an indisputable historical and legal fact that cannot be changed by anyone or any force.
Lin urged the US side to adhere to the One China principle and the three joint communiqués between China and the US, and to stop condoning and supporting "Taiwan independence" separatist forces in any form.
